L'homme et son désir, 1917.

This is a maquette of the ballet L'homme et son désir, based on a text by Paul Claudel, with choreography by Claudel, music by Darius Milhaud, and sets and costumes by Audrey Parr. A decorative cover houses the maquette, which consists of a handmade leporello (album folded à la japonaise) of seven double-sided panels. The recto side contains pasted panels of text, hand-written by Claudel and comprising the ballet's scenic and choreographic directions and libretto. Along side the text panels are cut-out designs of nude and clothed dancers, with hand-drawn ornamental additions in blue ink, by Parr. The entire verso is a semi-abstract collage, by Hélène Hoppenot, of black cut-out figures of musicians with gold sashes and holding instruments, placed above a band of plain commercial music paper with hand-cut geometricized black musical notes from the score of the ballet.

1 album (7 panels) : collage, pen and ink, and ink or pigment ; 32 cm.
